Secondary data analysis on the development of the social situation of private landlords in Germany recently published in the transfer journal easy (GESIS).

The fact that tenants have to spend increasing levels of money on housing is well known. But how do the beneficiaries of these rent payments live? What social positions characterise small-scale landlords in Germany?

Based on the Socio-Economic Panel, Philipp Kadelke's newly published article examines the group of small-scale landlords along key socio-demographic and economic characteristics. What are the key findings?

  • Compared to the population, landlords occupy the upper ranks of the social strata
  • The social profile proves to be consistent between 2002 and 2019
  • More and more private individuals in Germany are renting out living space on the side (with corresponding rental price dynamics)
